Chapter Twenty

EMMA

Saturday 28 October 2023 – 12:05 p.m.

Every step Emma took on her way into town felt like she was climbing a never-ending mountain, but her head had cleared somehow. A great weight had lifted from her shoulders, allowing her to be able to take a deep breath for the first time in a long time. Something in her had changed.

There was no such thing as The Creature, and it wasn’t after her daughter.

She was safe.

It must have been the stress from moving that had caused such a vivid hallucination. This was a new town with new people. It was bound to take her a while to settle in. Everything would be fine once Emma started seeing a therapist again. The first one hadn’t helped in the slightest. In fact, it had made things worse. Back then, after Phoebe had disappeared, the therapist had tried to convince Emma that it was normal and okay to feel grief and guilt over what had happened, and that she should accept it and allow the grief to come when it needed to.

But Phoebe was fine now, so why did she still feel so ... so ... Emma couldn’t even come up with a suitable word for how she was feeling because none of them fitted quite right.

Stressed?

Yes, she may have been stressed from the move, but everything had gone smoothly, bar the leaking pipe and that was now fixed. It wasn’t stress.

Worried?

Maybe, but what did she have to worry about now that Jordan had told her there was no strange, black creature after her daughter?

Uneasy?

Possibly. There was certainly a flicker of uneasiness in her stomach, which never seemed to disappear entirely. Maybe she was uneasy because of how Linda was acting. She’d noticed her wife’s skin didn’t glow like it used to, and her eyes didn’t sparkle as bright anymore, but nothing could change how she felt about her. Emma loved Linda with all her heart.

Yes, she’d loved Chris, her ex-husband, and a part of her would always love him because without him, she wouldn’t have had Alex and Phoebe and they were now her whole world. There had been a time when Chris had been her whole world, back when they’d first got married and before Alex had come along, but the moment those two red lines appeared on that pee-soaked stick, Chris had taken a back seat in her life.

That’s when things started to change for Emma. Slowly at first, very slowly, but after Phoebe had been born, she knew in her heart that she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life with Chris.

But then, two years ago, he’d died ...

It had happened so suddenly.

One day he was there.

And the next he was gone.

The police had said it was a tragic accident. He’d been drunk and fallen off a bridge. The phrase ‘death by suicide’ had floated around for a while, but Emma didn’t believe it. Why would Chris want to end his life? He’d been happy. He’d even found himself a girlfriend and had forgiven Emma for leaving him for Linda.
